How to Activate an Apple iPhone

Introduction

If you intend to intend to use Microsoft Outlook to synchronize your contacts and calendar, you should first ensure that you have the most current version of the Oracle Calendar Connector installed, click here to download newest version. After installing the latest Oracle Connector, continue with iTunes setup.

Apple iTunes is required to register and manage your iPhone. You must ensure that your copy of iTunes is at the current level, or install it if you don’t already have it on your computer. To ensure that you are at the current level, open it, and then select “Check for Updates” on the Help pull-down menu. To download and install iTunes, first close Outlook if it is open, then go to www.itunes.com.

There, you will have to specify your operating system and a few other details before downloading the installer. After it is downloaded, double-click on its icon to begin setup. Once setup is complete, start iTunes.

Activate Your iPhone

  1. Attach the iPhone to your computer using the USB cable that came with the iPhone. Windows will probably take a few seconds and then display some messages about a new device detected, and installing the appropriate device driver. After that, the following screen will appear in iTunes:
  2. Click on Continue.
  3. The next step is to create an Apple id (this is required).
  4. After creating your Apple id you will see the iPhone agreement screen:
  5. Check the box next to “I have read and agree to the IPhone Software License Agreement” and then click on Continue.
  6. Now you must name the iPhone and set up Sync options.
  7. After choosing which items you want synchronized, click on Done.
  8. Note: For most users, we do not recommend synchronizing your email using Outlook; rather we recommend configuring your iPhone to read your email directly from the UC Merced email server. Please refer to http://it.ucmerced.edu/docs/guides/cellphone/configure_email_iphone.cfm for assistance.
  9. Unless you want to specify detailed synchronization options, iPhone set up is complete at this point. Otherwise, click on the Info tab.
  10. Check the Sync Contacts box and select Outlook.
  11. Check the Sync Calendar box and select Outlook.
  12. Click Apply in the lower right hand corner; then select Sync when it appears to perform synchronization.
