JUNK filtering in myUCMerced's UCMWebmail

Introduction to Junk Filtering

The following are instructions for configuring UCMWebmail (the webmail portion of UC Merced's web portal - myUCMerced) to filter out JUNK when using UC Merced's email system (UCM Mail). Junk email is legitimate but potentially unwanted email, analogous to advertisements and solicitations that arrive at your home via the US Mail. Facilities are incorporated into the UC Merced email system to manage both categories of email; some filtering is automatic, and some must be configured by the user.

The email message is not changed in any other way.

This method of JUNK tagging allows end users to choose how they wish to handle suspected JUNK - either by implementing a filter in their email client of choice, or by doing nothing.

For this reason, it is recommended that you create a filter that will automatically place suspected JUNK into a separate folder rather than directly into the trash. You can then periodically take a glance at the contents of the folder to insure that no valid email messages were marked as JUNK, and then delete the contents of the entire folder.

Setting Up Your JUNK Filter

  1. Login to the UCM Portal at http://my.ucmerced.edu.
  2. On the portal homepage click the tab labeled "Webmail & Cal".
  3. Maximize the UCMWebMail channel by clicking the box in the top right corner.
  4. Click on the folders button.
  5. If you do not already have a folder to put your JUNK email into click on New Folder. Otherwise skip to step .
  6. Enter the new folder name. Here we use BULK
  7. Click Create.
  8. Click on Mail Preferences.
  9. At the bottom under "Configure Email Filter(s)" Choose these settings:
    Apply Filter On: HEADER
    If it: CONTAINS
    Untitled Box: X-UCM-SBAS-Status
    Place in folder: BULK
  10. Click "Save and Exit".

Your UCMWebmail is now configured to filter out JUNK. It is recommended that you periodically check your JUNK folder for valid email messages that may have been incorrectly marked as JUNK.

Additionally, remember that email messages that you have not deleted from your JUNK folder count toward your email quota.
