Connecting to a UCM1200 Printer

Introduction

The following instructions below are for use by faculty/staff who need assistance with connecting their computers to a departmental printer located on the UCM Print Server (also known as: \\ucm1200-ps003). The UCM Print Server contains a list of most departmental networked printers. The instructions will show you how to connect to one of those printers, using Windows or Mac.

Installation

Windows

  1. Go to Start -> Run (On Windows Vista you can click Start and type the next step in the search box.)
  2. In the run box enter \\ucm1200-ps003.ucmerced.edu
  3. Click OK
  4. The list of printers will appear. Double click on the printer you need to connect to. The printer's name should contain the printer model number as well as the location.
  5. A dialog box will appear. Click Yes
  6. You will see this box while it is connecting to the printer. You should be able to see your new printer in the list of printers.

Mac OSX Tiger

  1. Click Go, Utilities.
  2. Open Printer Setup Utility
  3. Click Add Printer or just Add
  4. Hold down the Alt/Option key and click More Printers.
  5. In the first drop down menu, choose Advanced.
  6. Under device, choose Windows Printer via SAMBA.
  7. Enter the Printer Name as the Device Name.
  8. In the Device URL enter smb://UCMID:password@ucmerced/ucm1200-ps003/printers_mapped_name
    Substitute UCMNetID and password with your UCMNetID and password. Then type @ucmerced.edu/ and substitute printers_mapped_name with the printer name. Example: smb://jsmith:j$mith18@ucmerced/ucm1200-ps003/hp4250-2222
  9. The Printer Model is Generic.
  10. Click Add.
  11. A window should appear with the newly printers in the printer list.

Mac OSX Leopard

  1. Click on the Apple icon and select System Preferences...
  2. Select Print and fax
  3. Click on the + sign to add a new printer
  4. Next find and select the Windows menu
  5. This will bring up a list of domans on the left pane. Next click on the ucmerced domain. On the pane to the right you will see a list of print servers, scroll down until you see ucm1200-ps003 then select it.
  6. You will be prompted to enter in your UCMNetID password.Enter it in and make sure you select “Remember this password in my keychain” then click on Connect.
  7. Once authenticated to the print server (ucm1200-ps003) you should see the entire print share on the far right pane
  8. To connect to a printer, scroll down until you see your printer, in this example we are going to connect to the HP Color LaserJet 4650. Then select the printer.
  9. The next thing to do is to install the print drivers. Locate Print Using: option and click on the up and drop down arrows then click on select a driver to use...
  10. Scroll down until you find your print driver and then click Add.
  11. On the next screen just click on Continue to proceed.
  12. Congratulations you have just connected to UCM1200-PS003 and added a print queue on your Mac.
