Understanding your UCMNetID

Your UCMNetID is the User ID part of your email address.Example:

  • yourUserID@ucmerced.edu is your email address
  • yourUserID is your UCMNetID

Your UCMNetID and password are the means by which you authenticate to online resources and services at UC Merced that you are authorized to use.

Any change to your UCMNetID will likely impact additional online systems or data feeds that relied upon your former UCMNetID.

At present, UCM’s legacy IdM system does not automatically update all systems and feeds downstream from the System of Record (SOR) or the IdM database that holds your verified and unique User ID. You may need to contact various system owners to determine if your UCMNetID needs to be manually changed, whether a data sync process will automatically update a system within a defined timeline, or whether a new system account can be created and merged. This is particularly the case for information systems that are not centrally managed by the Office of Information Technology. Once the IdM Upgrade is complete, a new process will be published.

Changing your UCM NetID to reflect your Preferred Name

 

A Preferred Name change provides you the ability to reflect an online identify consistent with how you name yourself in the real world. A Preferred Name is not a legal name change and your legal name will remain on university documents that have legal standing. A Preferred Name is associated with your legal names in UC Merced System of Record.

 

STEP 1:

To change your UCMNetID you must first request a name change in
a UC System of Record (UC SOR). There are two UC Merced System of Records for person names:

Staff and Faculty: The Personal Payroll System, soon to be replaced by UC Path.
Staff and Faculty should contact their departmental hiring manager to request a name change in the Payroll system

Students: The Banner Student Information System.
Students must contact the Registrar office to start the initial name change request to be made in Banner. Please fill out this form (Make “this form” an active link with the link below) and return it to the Student First Center.

Once you request a name change in a UC System of Record (SOR) that name will be displayed in the UCM Online Directory and will also be automatically updated in CatCourses.

Note: While your name will be automatically changed in the UC Merced Online Directory, other contact information such as title, phone, etc., must be manually changed by your department institutional proprietor. 

STEP 2:

Once your name is changed in the SOR, you may request that your UCMNetID be changed to reflect your preferred name change.

A change to your UCMNetID will result in a new email address as well, and display your preferred name in the FROM field of the email you send.

Upon request to change your UCMNetID, the Office of Information Technology will provide you the ability to access your email from your old account using your new email address. Select the ‘Request’ button (link below) located on this page to provide OIT with the information required to process this request for you. Your old UCMNetID and email address will be removed as an identifying record and not reused.

What do I need to get this service?

This service is available to all UC Merced staff, faculty and students. Please us the ‘Request’ button and complete the form with as much information as necessary.


What is included?

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will create your new UCMNetID and migrate your old email to your new email account.


When is support for this service available?

Support for this service is provided during standard operating hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
