Data Encryption
UCM IT recommends that client PCs store sensitive data on protected Server storage space. However, there are cases where this is not possible. At UC Merced, we have a large number of mobile-laptop users that require data to be easily accessible from their local system. Cryptainer SE will empower the user to store their sensitive data locally onto the PC with its very strong encryption software.
Cryptainer is a simple, easy to use encryption software application that creates an encrypted, password protected, virtual drive on computers running Windows XP and SP2.

Remote Access via VPN
Most UC Merced network services (email, calendar, portal, ...) are designed in such a way that they are securely accessible across the Internet. These services can be accessed from home or on the road using virtually any Internet Service Provider (ISP). However, some ISPs block certain kinds of traffic so that only the web interfaces work completely for some of our services. This specifically tends to happen when using Eudora, Outlook, or similar e-mail clients to send mail. Information about some local and national ISPs in use by the UC Merced community is given in our ISP FAQ.
Some applications, often older administrative ones, are not designed to run securely across the Internet (they do not encrypt passwords or data). Other applications, including access to electronic materials, have licensing restrictions that permit access only to those with UC Merced network addresses. Both of these problems are addressed by our VPN facility which encrypts all data exchanges and provides a UC Merced network address to remote users.
Client software is required to use VPN services. Clients are available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms. Online tutorials on configuring and using the UC Merced VPN facility are available for Windows and Mac users.
Non-Consensual Data Access
Access to data without the express consent of the owner will be handled by policy established by the Electronic Communication Policy, consisting of filling out the form located below, having it signed by a Vice Chancellor, and submitting it to the Department of Information Technology.
