Setting up VPN on the iPhone

VPN Access - Introduction

Enabling your iPhone to connect to the VPN will allow you to access site and resources off campus. This functionality is similar to how it works on Laptop and Desktop VPN connections.

Setting up VPN Access

  1. To get started click on the "Settings" icon. Please note, that depending on how many applications you have installed on your iPhone, this icon may not be on the first page.
  2. Select the "General" option.
  3. Select the "Network" option.
  4. Select the Select the "VPN" option.
  5. Select "IPSec"
  6. Fill out the fields with the following information:
    Description: UC Merced
    Server: janus.ucmerced.edu
    Account: UCMNetID
    Password: [Blank]
    Group Name: ucm_staff
    Secret: ucmstaff
After filling out the information, press "Save".
  7. The new VPN connection should appear as a configuration. To enable the VPN connection, toggle the switch to "On."
  8. After a short period, you will then be prompted to enter your UCMNetID and password. Much like the desktop client, you will need to enter this information every time you connect to the VPN.
  9. If the connection was successful, you will be prompted with a brief greeting and a "VPN" icon will appear on your status bar. Press "OK" to close the greeting. You can now press the home key to return to the main Phone screen and run any apps over the UCMerced VPN.

Disconnecting from the VPN

  1. To disconnect from the VPN, launch the "Settings" app.
  2. Toggle the "VPN" switch to "OFF."

Reconnecting to the VPN

  1. Reconnecting to the VPN once it has been setup is quite easy. Simply, select the "Settings" app.
  2. Toggle the "VPN" switch to "ON.
  3. Enter your UCMNetID and Password.
  4. If the connection was successful, you will be prompted with a brief greeting and a "VPN" icon will appear on your status bar. Press "OK" to close the greeting. You can now press the home key to return to the main Phone screen and run any apps over the UCMerced VPN.
