An introduction to UC Merced's Faculty Content Management System
UC Merced's The Faculty Content Management System (FCMS) was built to allow easy authoring and management of UC Merced Faculty web sites. This tool gives site owners the ability to create, update and inactivate menus, content and features for their sites.
If you would like a site to be created for you, there are a few steps:
- Contact our web team who will create a site within the FCMS for you.
- Once the site is setup, you can start to add menus, content, upload images and documents. However, if you need assistance, we will setup a time for a one on one consultation to go over your new site and the features and functionality of the Faculty Content Management System.
- The site allows you to upload graphics for your site. However, if you need assistance for customized graphics or have features on your site then contact Communications who will assist you in creating graphics or features for your site.
- When you are done creating your site, contact our web team again who will then link the Our Faculty page back to your new web site.
The Managers
There are five tools built into the Faculty CMS site owners will need to use in order to edit and maintain their sites: the Sitewide Information Manager, Menu Manager, Feature Manager, Content Manager and Feature Graphics Manager. After logging into the FCMS, users will be able to use any of these managers by clicking on its link in the left-hand menu.
Sitewide Information Manager
The Sitewide Information Manager is used to control each site's Sitename, header information, and image path.
Menu Manager
The Menu Manager is used to control the menu items of each site. Site owners have full control over the number of menu items, their text, whether the link is external or not, how deep in the menu hierarchy each menu item is, and in what order the menu items appear.
Each menu item can be toggled between active and inactive, which allows site owners to easily keep content from being displayed without having to permanently delete it.
To edit a menu item, click on its name.
To create submenus, click on the "View Submenu" link.
Feature Manager
Site owners can use the Feature Manager to easily control the features that appear on the right and left sides of their pages. If multiple features active for a site, a feature will be selected at random on each page load. Depending on the site template being used, features can contain a title, content, image, and a link embedded in the title.
Content Manager
The most important part of any site is content, which is controlled through the Content Manager. Each content has a title to be displayed on the page, the actual content, and a system title. The system title can be different from the content title to enable site owners to name content items differently than they appear to site visitors for organizational purposes.
