OIT provides and supports full disk encryption technology for university-owned Windows and Mac devices. Encryption is recommended for all university owned mobile devices. Staff and faculty using mobile devices to access or maintain data classified as protected or confidential MUST have those devices encrypted. See the UC Merced Data Classification Guide for examples of protected and confidential data.
An active faculty or staff member with a UCMNetID.
OIT will install and configure software which provides complete encryption of the device’s disk while at rest. When combined with other recommended security practices such as strong passwords and screen timeouts, encryption technology greatly reduces the risk of data exposure if a device is lost or stolen. On most modern computing hardware, the encryption software is transparent to the end user and results in no change in functionality or end user experience. OIT will contact you to schedule a time for installation.
