Understanding your Preferred Name and UCMNetID
Your Preferred Name is the name displayed in various UC Merced systems and online resources. Your preferred name provides you with the ability to reflect an online identity consistent with how you name yourself in the real world. A Preferred Name is not your legal name. Your legal name will remain on university documents and official records.
Your UCMNetID is the first part of your email address. Example:
- 'yourUserID@ucmerced.edu' is your email address
- 'yourUserID' is your UCMNetID
Anyone can request a change in their preferred name. Students can change their preferred name themselves by visiting the Biodemographics page. Faculty and staff may request a preferred name change from their departmental MSO. If you do not know who your MSO is, please contact the IT Service Desk.
Your UCMNetID and password are the means by which you authenticate to online resources and services at UC Merced. Changes to UCMNetID generally require a legal name change. If you have changed your legal name with Human Resources or the University Registrar and wish to request a different UCMNetID, click "request service" above. Exceptions to the legal name change requirement may be granted by Student Affairs, Human Resources, or Academic Personnel.
Preferred name changes are available to all UC Merced staff, faculty, and students. UCMNetID changes are available after a legal name change or by exception to policy.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will reflect your preferred name in all applications that support it. UCMNetID changes include migration of data (email, etc) from the old account to the new.
