Virtual Private Network (VPN): Remote Access


The Office of Information Technology offers a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service, providing encrypted remote access to the UC Merced network and campus resources for current students, faculty, and staff.

What do I need to get this service?

An active UC Merced account (UCMNetID) and your preferred 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) device.

What is included?

The UC Merced VPN service provides a secure, encrypted connection to the UC Merced network. If you connect to the VPN service from off campus, you will have access to resources that are otherwise limited for use only on the UC Merced network (For example, library resources). Client software is included for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, and iOS.

When is support for this service available?

The VPN service is available for use 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Self-Service setup documentation for the VPN service is available in our ServiceNow Knowledge Base. Technical support is available, during normal OIT Service Desk business hours.

How long does it take to get the service?

Instructions for the download, installation, and configuration of the client are available HERE and can be completed in only a few minutes.

How do I stop or change the service?

The OIT Service Desk is available during standard operating hours to stop or change a service request. For more information, including what happens when an employee separates, please refer to the VPN FAQ.
