Virtual Private Network: Remote Access for Current Students, Faculty and Staff (Janus)


A virtual private network (VPN) connection provides encrypted remote access to the UC Merced network.

What do I need to get this service?

A valid UCMNetID, and an active internet connection.

What is included?

The VPN service provides a secure, encrypted connection to the UC Merced network. If you connect to the VPN service from off campus, you will have access to resources that are otherwise limited for use only on the UC Merced network. The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client software is available for Windows, Linux, and Android, while Mac OS X or iOS devices can be configured to use the built-in VPN client.

When is support for this service available?

The VPN service is available for use 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Self-Service setup documentation for the VPN service is available in our Knowledge Base. For technician assistance with configuring your device, or for technical support using the service, please contact the OIT Service Desk during standard operating hours.

How long does it take to get the service?

Once the client is configured, it should take less than a minute to establish a connection to the VPN service. The self-service Knowledge Base tutorials for configuring devices are available for immediate use, or visit the OIT Service Desk for in-person support during standard operating hours. You may also call or email the OIT Service Desk for assistance, but if a service request is necessary, the window is 3 business days from the day the service order is placed.

How do I stop or change the service?

Use the disconnect feature in the client software to end the VPN connection. The OIT Service Desk can be contacted during standard operating hours to stop or change a service request.
