On October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will reach its end of support (aka retirement) date set by Microsoft. Critically, this means Windows 10 will not receive software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes, which will create a risk to university systems and data on these devices.

Please use this site to help you install Windows 11 on your university-owned device using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant (option 1).
What is the user impact of not upgrading my device?
Systems that are not upgraded will not be able to access Gold-level privileged data.

What do I do if my device cannot be upgraded?
Systems that cannot be updated to Windows 11 will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, this means you will need to purchase a new device that can run Windows 11 no later than October 14th 2026. In the meantime, please submit a temporary security exception.
What if I have software that can only be run on Windows 10?
Please fill out a security exception.
Is Windows 11 free?
Windows 11 is included in licensing for all UC Merced devices that are maintained by our Device Management Program.
Do we provide Windows 11 for devices that are not University-owned?
No, we do not license any devices that are not maintained via our Device Management Program.
