Digital Accessibility at UC Merced: ADA Compliance Deadline and Campus Resources

Dear Colleagues,

An important deadline associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and corresponding UC Policy IMT-1300 is approaching. By April 24, 2026 faculty, staff, and UC Merced affiliated groups are required to ensure that all digital materials they produce and maintain are fully accessible. This includes web content on campus and campus-affiliated websites, teaching/learning materials in CatCourses, documents, presentations, video and multimedia, email communications, and social media.

Given the scope of this federal requirement and the volume of digital materials produced across campus every day, we recognize that achieving compliance will require sustained effort. To support this work, the university has procured remediation tools and developed guidance, training, and consultation services to help update existing content and ensure that new materials are accessible from day one.

To learn more and begin preparing for this work:

  • Register to attend the Digital Accessibility Town Hall on March 11, 2026 at 1:00 PM for an overview of the law and policy, the resources available to you, and an extended Q&A session.

Explore the comprehensive resources available at https://ucm.edu/digital-a11y, including:

  • Guidance on evaluating current practices and incorporating accessibility considerations into planning and content development
  • Strategies for remediating existing digital content or removing outdated materials from digital spaces

Depending on your role, you may receive additional communications in the coming days and weeks outlining:

  • Training opportunities tailored to specific content types and platforms
  • Tools and practical resources to support efficient content creation and remediation
  • Consultation services to address unit-specific needs

While the law establishes the compliance timeline of this work, the effort itself reflects something more fundamental — our commitment to access, inclusion, and equity in every dimension of our work. Digital accessibility ensures that students, faculty, staff, and members of the public can fully engage with the information and services UC Merced provides. When we remove barriers, we strengthen the effectiveness and reach of our institution. Together, we will ensure that UC Merced’s digital environment reflects our shared values and our commitment to serving the entire campus community.

Sincerely,
