DUO Phone-Based (Text & Call) Authentication Depreciation

What is Changing?

In response to an increase in phishing attacks via text, OIT has begun to disable phone-based authentication (Text & Call). Staff, Faculty, Affiliate, & Service Accounts have already had these authentication methods disabled during the Fall 2025 semester. Due to the amount of Student and Alumni accounts, we will disable phone-based authentication throughout the Spring 2026 semester in groups, starting on Tuesday, February 17th

How can I prepare?

If you have the Duo Mobile app installed on your device and use it as your primary authentication method, you do not need to change your 2FA settings.

If you primarily utilize phone-based authentication methods (Text & Call), you must install the Duo Mobile app on a supported device and enroll your device. Alternatively, you can open a ticket with the Information Security Team to discuss options if you do not have a device that supports the Duo Mobile app.

Note: It is recommended that you check your 2FA devices and remove any unused or outdated devices to strengthen your account further and clear out digital clutter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after phone-based authentication is disabled?

Once phone-based authentication (Text & Call) has been disabled on your account, one of two things happens.
  • If you have Duo Mobile enrolled as an authentication method, you can log in using it as your primary authentication method.
  • If you do not have Duo Mobile enrolled you will be locked out of your account and need to visit the Service Desk (COB1 127) for assistance.

What does the Duo Mobile app do on my phone?

The Duo Mobile app requires camera & notification access and displays basic device information, such as the operating system version. Duo Mobile cannot read your emails, it cannot see your browser history, and it cannot remotely wipe your phone.

  • Camera access is required only when scanning QR codes during device enrollment.
  • Notification access is required for Verified Push notifications.
  • Basic device information (Operating System Version) is used to verify the device's security when the app is installed.

What if I don't want or can't install the Duo App on my personal phone?

You can request a security consultation with the information security team to discuss options to keep your account secure and meet your needs.
